Traditionally, when a man is getting ready to ask his beautiful partner to marry him, he would start to look at diamonds and ring designs that are available in any number of jewellery stores, letting the qualified jeweller, guide him along the process. Given the fact that the jeweller has probably been in the industry for any number of years and that the jeweller works with diamonds, gemstones, gold and platinum every single day of his working life, there is something to be said about letting the expert give you the appropriate guidance, to make sure you are getting the absolute best that you can get in your engagement ring.
What we are finding these days with the “information revolution” IE the advent of the Internet, is that guys are doing research on the net and then coming in armed with all sorts of information regarding diamonds and rings and even what sort of gold they want. More often than not, and unfortunately they don’t actually realise this themselves, but the info they have gathered, is conflicting or particularly biased, in terms of wanting to direct the person looking on the Internet into buying site un seen and there and then!
Chances are too, that they have left a small bit of information around the place and given their partner the BIG tip off that something is cooking…
At Eskae Jeweller, we are happy for somebody to do the research on the Internet before they come and see us, i don’t believe that we will deal with anyone who hasn’t already done this from now on. it is a sign of the times, and the times are progressing forward, and we should all be grateful that we have the capacity to do so.
Part of the reason i am happy for people to do this research on the net before hand, is that often they will come across diamonds that are cheaper than what we or numerous other jewellers will carry. there are many reasons for this and you can read a previous blog post here, about the different characteristics that make a diamond exceptional and outstanding. but the best part about it is that it provides me with a contrast straight away.
Without getting into the diamond characteristics here, the best way to buy a diamond is to allow yourself to be guided by a QUALIFIED jeweller, who can help you tailor your purchase to what it is you want to communicate when you are buying a diamond or coloured gemstone for that matter. It is OK to do some research on the net, but bear in mind that you need to be looking for the background knowledge and NOT the cheapest price in your due diligence. also look to keep yourself in the sort of ballpark that you are comfortable with, IE; if you know you have X amount to spend and start looking at diamonds with a value of Y, they could and probably are two completely different diamonds for many reasons.
A great rule of thumb to use when getting ready to buy an engagement diamond and ring, is to split your budget into 2 parts:-
- the money needed to have the ring custom crafted, which can be anything between $1500-$2000
- the money you spend on your diamond, which is everything else you have in your budget after the ring has been considered.
the above guideline is rough, and it will depend on how complex the ring design is that you are after, as this can vary the amount of time needed to make your jewellery.
another thing to keep in mind is the style of your ring. for example, if you are using a round shaped diamond in the centre, it will often look better if you then continue that profile onto the shape of the band, so that when you view the piece as a whole, it is all concurrent and you can tell that it has been been designed with some thought.
with diamond jewellery design it is often the small simple things that make a world of difference to the overall look of the finished piece of jewellery.
if you are in the market, or know somebody who is in the market for and engagement diamond and ring, and you have not experienced this level of service, then get in touch with me here. i will be more than happy to help guide you along with probably one of the biggest and definitely the most important decisions you will make in your lifetime.
